Introduction to Homeopathy

homeopathy in Bridport Dorset with registered homeopath Clare Willcock

Homeopathy is practised by many millions of people around the world as a long-established Complementary medicine and homeopathy in Bridport and Dorset with Registered Homeopath Clare Willcock is part of that. First discovered over 200 years ago by the German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, Hahnemann experimented with the effects of current medicines. These methods were often barbaric, to say nothing of the common over-use of mercury, arsenic and bloodletting with leeches. This usually caused more harm than good. His discoveries of how to use natural materials in an extremely dilute form were evidence-based by him. And, over time, by hundreds of other people (called ‘provers’) who collected the evidence of their trials.

These results became formalised into a structured system of symptoms, resulting in a new organised methodology of prescribing. Homeopathy using natural materials was established in the light of these discoveries, with few or no side effects. “The women of that day, therefore, sought safer medical treatment, and they turned to homeopathy in significant numbers.” The principles of Homeopathy were endorsed and expanded upon later by other doctors.

International Homeopathy

In Germany today: “Since 1991 (7th amendment of the medical registration regulations), homeopathy is part of the catalogue of educational aims in medical education. Therefore, all medical faculties offer lectures in homeopathy.”

In India today: ”At present there are about 195 medical colleges of homoeopathy in the country allowed by the Central Council for Homoeopathy including 38 post-graduate colleges to teach & promote Homoeopathic System of Medicine. In India, homoeopathy is the third most popular method of medical treatment after Allopathy and Ayurveda. There are over 200,000 registered homeopathic doctors in India currently, with approximately 12,000 more being added every year”.

In the UK

In the UK homeopathy is widely accepted, and by over 5 million people each year use complementary therapies including homeopathy. Famous people use Homeopathy such as the Royal Family. Also, celebrities such as Catherine Zeta-Jones, Martin Sheen, Vidal Sassoon, Jerry Hall and many others use homeopathy and have publicly declared their support for it.

“A-listers such as David Beckham, Jude Law, Helena Bonham Carter, Jennifer Aniston and Chris Martin are all fans. They have the fame, money, and resources and like the Royal Family they choose homeopathy. Many celebrities, such as Cindy Crawford and Roger Daltrey first discovered homeopathy because of an illness their child had. They all found that homeopathy worked where conventional medicine had not been able to help. Others, such as Jade Jagger, Carol Smillie and Gaby Roslin also use homeopathic treatments on their children, and Helena Bonham Carter managed to conceive a second time with the help of homeopathy.”

Taking a Natural Holistic Approach

In thinking about medicine we’ve all seen the terms “integrative,” “alternative,” and “complementary,” but what do they really mean?

Integrative medicine “integrates” a combination of therapies from conventional methods and complementary therapies. Alternative therapies are sometimes grouped with Complementary therapies, but each group is different. Alternative treatments are used in place of conventional medicines or treatments. A Complementary treatment such as Homeopathy works alongside mainstream medicine. However, it is true Homeopathy could be thought of as integrative in the sense that it is very compatible with certain other treatments. This includes working alongside the Primary healthcare of Osteopathy.

Naturally Whole

Although a diagnosis via your GP is helpful in understanding your health issues, Homeopathy is not a diagnostic medicine. Homeopathy is a natural, holistic medicine using materials from the natural world. It is based upon the body’s own system of balancing its physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects. Naturally whole. ‘Holistic’ means ‘whole’ and in medicine that context is in helping the whole body to its optimum health. All body systems, such as the respiratory, hormonal, nervous and digestive systems are inter-linked. All mental and emotional processes affect the body in some way, whether positively or negatively.

Having an imbalance, sickness or disease will be affecting your whole state even though you may have the main symptoms in one part. In Homeopathy, small pointers to changes in the body are evidence of where the imbalance lies and the correct remedy will prompt your body to repair.

Introduction to Bridport, Dorset

Bridport in West Dorset is a vibrant and cultural market town with many thriving independent shops and plenty going on most days of the week. With a twice weekly street market, including a monthly Farmers Market, two or three Garden centres, a cinema, many cafes and pubs, some with live music.  There is too, a large Arts Centre with other independent galleries close by. A Square with live music happens on some days, with local bands and individual musicians. The Salvation Army Band is a regular contributor. I love them all and I love brass bands! Bridport has many organised local groups which offer a wide range of interests. So there is more than enough to keep busy if that’s what you’d like to do.

And then, of course, there is the sea and beach at West Bay: West Bay beach is part of the Dorset area of the Jurassic Coastline, of fossil fame; its beach leads into Chesil beach for miles, and so to Portland. This seascape is part of the Marine Conservation Society, and has its highest water quality benchmark. Many people go swimming at West Bay and to local beaches, although of course you need be wary of the tides. There can be strong riptides. RNLI Life Guards operate during the school summer holidays;

The West Bay Discovery Centre is a treasure trove of pop-up displays, well-researched and excitingly displayed coastal and town information. I love going there, the volunteers are so friendly. The association of Bridport with ropemaking goes back to the 9th Century and the town’s Museum has several events each year alongside its exhibitions, guided walks and rope-making demos. There is so much history in this area, including the fictionalised history by Thomas Hardy, who named Bridport as Port Bredy.

My Personal Bridport

That’s the town and seascape picture of Bridport, and I love all of that. More personally, what I love even more is the space to go walking in the countryside. To see huge rolling views over long-distance landscapes, and climb hills, or enter into quiet pockets of woodland. Being back ‘home’ in nature is what people are more and more appreciating is essential to human wellbeing, and it is certainly true for me. Balancing a healthly lifestyle with homeopathy I have many nature interests, and having grown up in rural parts of Britain as a child I used to know and name nearly all of the common plants and flowers; that knowledge is still within me, it just needs stirring up.

Meet Clare – Registered Homeopath

My Love of Plants

Homeopathy and plants together are the most fascinating subjects to study and to apply them practically – more than I could ever wish for. In the past, I wanted to study Botany but at the time I wasn’t so interested in taxonomy, plant chemistry and genetics. I considered too Gardening as a career, and Herbalism. But they didn’t quite fit my need to understand more about human psychology and emotions. In Homeopathy I am delighted to enjoy a discipline which positively affects and treats symptoms. I so enjoy seeing how people’s history and experiences, which have contributed to their current ill health profile, are brought together in a homeopathic remedy.

Both Bach Flower Remedies and Homeopathy provide me with the intellectual satisfaction of a scientific discipline together with the practical application of seeing results on a mental, emotional, physical and spiritual level. And, in Homeopathy there are remedies made from material substances other than plants, so I learn about those too. Perfect.

Watching Birds

Bird watching is another key interest, and like plants, I know the names and habitats of many of the birds locally. The raptors are always a thrill to see, and so are flocks of long-tailed tits. Hedge sparrows opposite me are noisy neighbours, but I love them. It’s terrific to watch a regular squad of jackdaws confidently striding about on the grass outside here in Bridport where I live. It’s their intelligence, their confidence and the communication within their group that I love most about them. With any ground-feeding birds I’m always astounded that they can see tiny movement. Or hear the smallest vibration which tells them where their food is. All that despite the loud noise of passing traffic.

My Walks and Hedgerow Seasonal Treats

When I go on my walks I prefer to go alone most of the time. Although having met another keen walker who has become a valued friend, we sometimes go together. We understand each other’s need to be quiet at times to enjoy our surroundings. Human voices tend to scare away the wildlife! We enjoy thinking about plants, where they grow and their medicinal qualities, and the Botanist element in me surfaces to identify to which plant group they belong.

A few years ago I spent several weekends on a course at Trill Farm, near Axminster. There, I learnt about plants, herbs and their chosen habitat and how to make tinctures from what is growing locally. Nowadays, I make my own tinctures sometimes. And from local Dorset hedgerows I gather and freezer a few seasonal treats such as apples, blackberries and elderberries. There have been loads this year, really fat and very juicy ones because of all the sunshine. You can see more about my Walks by going to Homeopathy Blog
